Gynecomastia Surgery: Before & After Expectations
Male breast surgery is also known as gynecomastia surgery (reduction of the breast) that could significantly enhance chest shape and self confidence in men with extra breast tissue. In case you are about to be taken through this process, then you want to know what to expect prior to and after the surgery. Preparation will reduce stress and make you achieve the most. My preoperative and post-operative experience will be as follows:
Pre Surgery Preparation and What To Expect Before Surgery -Your final two weeks before surgery will be a consultation and pre-operative appointments. The surgeon will examine your chest and discuss your goals of surgery. Your surgeon will provide you with certain pre-op instructions. In general, about a week or two before surgery you need to steer clear of drugs or supplements that slow down bleeding (aspirin or some herbs, etc.), and quit smoking in advance to enhance recovery. On the day of the surgery, plan to spend at least one week off work or school, and have someone come and take you home and assist you in the first or second day or two after the surgery.
You are most likely to undergo general anesthesia on the day of surgery. The process is approximately 12 hours. The surgeon will extract the excess tissue and fat on the glands (which is usually done by liposuction) using small cuts. Then the cuts are stitched up and a vest of dressing or compression is strapped on your chest.
Post-Surgery- Recovery and Results: Once you first wake up, your chest will be bandaged and you will have a compression garment on. The recovery should involve swelling, bruising and soreness. You will get to learn about pain medicine and how to look after your cuts. During week one, rest at home and do not lift heavy or place your hands above your head. In approximately a week, a significant number of patients are able to resume employment at a desk. To reduce swelling and help you maintain your new shape of the chest, you will have to put on a compression vest when you are awake and when sleeping.
The bruising typically heals in two weeks and the swelling disappears in approximately 4-6 weeks. This chest will keep refining in the coming months- it is usual to see final results in the 3-months time. Any tiny scars (which are normally in the periphery of the nipple) will clear up considerably within the following year.
Adhering to the exercise schedule of your surgeon, light cardio is often good after about 23 weeks, but nothing hard or involving the chest during about 6 weeks. Remember, the tissue removed off the breast is gone forever. Eating healthy and keeping your weight constant will make the difference in the long-term. A lot of weight gain (or some hormones/steroids) may result in the area swelling up again, but in the vast majority of cases the enhancement is here to stay and your less feminine, more masculine chest will be there to remain.
