Laser Scar Removal

Laser Scar Removal- how it works

A scar can be extremely painful as the it may not just cause cosmetic problems, but also cause skin tightening, which could limit your ability to move. Some scars can itch or even be painful long after the wound has healed. If the scar is on your face, then you may feel hesitant to venture out of your comfort zone, meet new people or go to new places. When it starts affecting your personal, social and professional life, it is time to take action.

Laser treatment for scar removal

Laser scar removal is also called laser skin resurfacing or laser scar revision. Laser is used to reduce many skin problems. Wrinkles, dark spots, skin lesions and scars can all be effectively treated with laser treatment.

Laser scar removal is a outpatient procedure. It does not need general anesthesia. Local anesthetic and an oral sedative may be all you need.

During the procedure laser beams will be used to remove the scar or make tiny holes in the scar. The procedure will make your body produce collagen in the treated area. This will repair the scar and make it near invisible. You should remember, a scar can never be completely removed, but it can be made less visible through laser treatment. Depending on the nature and extent of your scar, you may need multiple treatments to get the best result.

Types of Laser Scar Removal Treatments

CO2 Laser

A beam of light is used, either as short pulses or as a continuous beam to remove a thin layer of skin. There is very little damage to surrounding skin as the beam is precisely targeted. Only small areas can be treated at a time and so you will require multiple sessions to treat the scar completely. You will need up to two weeks to recover.

Fractional Laser

This procedure uses narrow columns of light to tighten collagen. The laser goes in deeper but less skin is injured so the recovery is faster. You will recover in about one week.

Recovery after laser therapy

Laser therapy reduces scars by damaging the scar to induce collagen production and repair. So immediately after the procedure you skin will be raw and you may have some discomfort, redness and other mild effects. Use ice packs and pain relievers to manage pain.

The treated area will be bandaged for 1 full day. Once the bandage is removed, you should take proper care of the wound. Your surgeon will give you precise instructions on how to care for the wound. Follow the instructions accurately for quick healing and best results. You will also be given a healing ointment to apply on the treated area. This will prevent sab formation.

During the recovery period do not apply any products on the skin to avoid irritation. Take precautions and avoid places that could lead to infections.

Healing time may differ from person to person, but usually it takes between 5 and 21 days for complete recovery depending upon the type of therapy used. You may have some redness in the area for a few months after complete healing. Consult your surgeon about concealing it with oil free make-up.

Customized treatment

Laser therapy is done in a hospital, but you will not need to stay overnight. It is a day care procedure and you can return home in the evening. The type of laser you need and the number of sessions you will require for complete treatment can be decided only after evaluating your scar. Our cosmetic surgeon has considerable experience in laser therapy. He will guide you to the best treatment option and ensure that you have the best result.
